A community Christmas
Allenton Big Local has funded another successful Christmas event, which was held at Allenton Market on 17 December. Santa and his reindeers were in attendance once again and proved as popular as ever with the children who visited him.
You can see some of the photos from the event in the short photo video below:
This year’s event was organised by resident volunteers from Allenton Community Support. As parents, they attended the first Christmas event in 2015 and were so impressed that they wanted to make sure it happened again in 2016. Supported by Nacro, the volunteers wrapped 500 presents for Santa, distributed 300 Christmas hats, organised cookies and refreshments, and gave out tickets for the event using their own ticketing system designed to reduce waiting times for families.
They made sure that everything ran smoothly on the day and welcomed parents and children as they entered the grotto to visit Santa Claus. Around 435 children saw Santa in just over four and a half hours. Children were given a small gift, a pack of reindeer food for sprinkling on Christmas Eve, and a chance to write a letter to Santa. Everyone who attended the event was offered a hot drink and a cookie and an opportunity to see the reindeers.
The event was also supported by Derby Homes, who provided the use of their Community Engagement vehicle for the day and staff support that was vital in making sure Santa was able to put in an appearance.
“Allenton Big Local funded this event, but it is the efforts of the local parents from Allenton Community Support that made it happen,” said a spokesperson from Allenton Big Local. “The volunteers put in a huge amount of effort to deliver this event for their community. The work that they have done epitomises the true spirit of Big Local. We are also very grateful for the support we received from Derby Homes – and, of course, Santa!”
“Santa was amazing! The children were so excited.”
Residents who attended the event were invited to post photos on the Allenton Big Local Facebook page. Three of the people who shared their photographs were chosen at random to receive a festive reindeer decoration as a memento of the day. The winners were Lisa Simpson, Aimee Barber and Jess Bryant.
