Students from Merrill Academy are being given the opportunity to learn work-related communications and marketing skills by helping to publicise the Allenton Big Local project. Starting in June, English and Media students from the Academy will get the chance to attend weekly media workshops, where they will write press releases, news articles and web content to promote the project.
The workshops will be delivered by Jane Bettany from Derby-based communications company Guidemark Publishing, and Imogen Snow from Merrill Academy. The sessions will teach the students how to create newsletters, write content, manage print and update the project’s website. Students will also devise promotional activities for The Event in Allenton, will take place on 13th September at Merrill College.
Kim Bell from the Allenton Big Local team said: “We chose this method of communication and promotion for the project because it fits perfectly with the Big Local ethos. By becoming involved, the students can improve their skills, increase their knowledge, and gain valuable work experience that should help them access apprenticeship, employment or university opportunities in the future.”
“We are very happy for our students to be part of the communications and marketing team for this project,” said Mike Davie, Vice Principal at Merrill Academy. “It will develop their talents, increase their confidence and help them understand how the theories they learn in the classroom can be applied to a work situation.”
